Truman Breaks Ground on Moxy Calgary East Village

The 131-room lifestyle hotel brings new visitor accommodation to the Bow River and marks Truman’s first East Village project

SEPTEMBER 29, 2026 – CALGARY, AB – Truman today celebrated the start of construction on Moxy Calgary East Village, a 131-room lifestyle hotel that will be operated by Marriott International. The hotel will be built at 656 Confluence Way S.E., on the Jack and Jean Leslie RiverWalk. It will transform one of East Village’s last prime riverfront sites and become the community’s third hotel.

Truman purchased the site from CMLC in 2025, and construction on the $58-million project began in mid-September. It is expected to support 370 construction jobs before opening to guests in 2028. The five-storey hotel will include a reception area, bar, lounge and outdoor thermal spa.

“Moxy is designed around smart rooms and shared spaces where guests can relax, work and connect,” said Tim Reardon, Regional Vice President, Western Canada for Marriott International. “Guests check in at the bar, while flexible lobby spaces and food and drink available around the clock help make the arrival part of the experience. That energy is a strong fit for East Village.”

The hotel will overlook the Bow River and offer direct access to East Village’s cycling network, George C. King Bridge, St. Patrick’s Island, restaurants, shops and public spaces. It is the fourth project to begin construction in East Village in 2026, showing continued private-sector confidence in the community’s master plan, led by Calgary Municipal Land Corporation (CMLC).

“East Village is a natural home for Moxy,” said Tony Trutina, Chief Operating Officer of Truman. “It is a well-connected community with an exceptional riverfront. This hotel will bring more visitors to the neighbourhood, support nearby businesses and create long-term economic activity.”

Moxy Calgary East Village expands Truman’s hospitality portfolio and its relationship with Marriott International. In 2025, the companies announced plans for the W and JW Marriott Hotels & Residences and an Autograph Collection Hotel on Stampede Park. Moxy Calgary East Village is the second Truman hotel to begin construction in Calgary’s Rivers District, following the Autograph Collection Hotel in early 2026. Truman is moving forward with approximately $2.5 billion in private investment across six Greater Downtown hotel properties, with additional announcements expected.

These projects respond to a clear shortage of hotel rooms in Calgary. Tourism Calgary and the Calgary Hotel Association estimate the citywide deficiency at between 3,000 to 4,500 new rooms, with most needed in the Greater Downtown. The hotel will serve East Village and the nearby Culture + Entertainment District, where public investments in the expanded BMO Centre and Scotia Place are increasing Calgary’s ability to host visitors, conferences and major events.

Once open, Moxy Calgary East Village is expected to support 310 full-time jobs at the hotel and tourism-related businesses. It is projected to generate $36.2 million each year from hotel operations and added tourism activity, along with $12.1 million in annual government revenue (Parcel Economics, 2026).
